Does your farm safety plan include naloxone (Narcan®)?

Workplaces that are federally mandated to have first aid kits may want to begin preparing for state regulation updates that will take effect soon. Starting December 2026, New York State will require first aid supplies to include naloxone (Narcan®). Naloxone rapidly reverses the effects of an opioid emergency, which can occur due to a number of substances including prescription pain medications and synthetic opioids. It restores breathing so that the individual can stay awake and talking until emergency medical services arrives. It does not have an effect if someone has not taken opioids. NYCAMH can help enhance your operation’s on-farm emergency preparedness through a training that covers how to administer naloxone. Note: Due to changing state legislation, Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (OOPP) kits provided by NYCAMH cannot be used in first aid kits at OSHA-regulated facilities.
