After facing farm-related injuries, Matthew of Medeiros Farm turned to the John May Farm Safety Fund to update their handling facilities, stating “I decided that I wouldn’t put any of us in that position again.” His previous handling equipment included a bud box and sorting gates, which still required a lot of direct human interaction with animals and offered limited animal restraint options. With the help of the fund, Matthew purchased a squeeze chute, crowding tub, adjustable alley, and palpation cage and feels confident that they “can safely handle the cows when needed.”
”As you know, we had some serious farm injuries this year. I was seriously considering giving up beef cows which may have driven us out of farming. Now we can safely stay with large animal farming.
