Northeast Fisheries Winch Safety Improvement Project

On fishing vessels, winches are used to wind in, or wind out fishing lines constantly. Winch entanglements, or people getting caught in lines, on fishing vessels are frequent and often result in fatalities. The fatality rates in the northeast fisheries exceed all other regions in the United States. Fishermen work in close proximity to the operating winch, yet most vessels do not have emergency shutoffs or proper machine guarding methods.

This project will lead to implementation and dissemination of new approaches and designs for primary and secondary prevention of winch entrapments providing direct impact on the northeast fisheries.
